We are delighted to announce that Broughton Sanctuary has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable tourism, winning at the recent Responsible Tourism Awards. This achievement follows our inclusion in National Geographic’s Cool List 2024, which praised the success of our rewilding efforts and our innovative approach to integrating eco-tourism with conservation.

A Commitment to Sustainability

At Broughton Sanctuary, we have always believed in the healing and inspiring power of nature. Our 3,000-acre estate is not just a beautiful destination but a living example of how conservation and tourism can thrive together. Over recent years, we have been working closely with rewilding experts, including Alastair Driver and Rewilding Britain, to restore the natural biodiversity of our landscapes. These efforts have brought significant environmental benefits, from the return of native plants and wildlife to the protection of fragile ecosystems.

Emeritus professor Harold Goodwin, managing director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership and chair of the judges said: “All our Rest of the World Responsible Tourism Award winners competed in a very tough field and are all outstanding examples of initiatives which will provide inspiration for other destinations and organisations to learn from.”

Commended in the Nature Postive category as “One to Watch”, the judges comment: “Established in 1097, Broughton Hall in Yorkshire has been passed from generation to generation in the Tempest family. Recently renamed the Broughton Sanctuary to better represent their “vision and mission to be a regenerative space that is rooted in the Nature and Wellbeing of both humanity and the planet.” Their rewilding project began five years ago with native tree planting and habitat restoration at a scale of 1000 acres and by the reintroduction of iron-age pigs. Their Lens on Nature and Guided Star Gazing engage visitors and guests with nature, complementing the hospitality provided in the Hall and the spa. The judges are excited to see the scale of the ambition with plans to introduce rare breeds and reintroduce beavers. We would like to see a further application in due course when it is possible to report on the biodiversity impacts of this rewilding and the Iron Pigs have generated a trophic cascade.”

Rewilding as a Key Attraction

This award in responsible tourism highlights our dedication to making Broughton Sanctuary a place where visitors can reconnect with nature while supporting its preservation. Whether through guided nature walks, volunteering on our nature recovery projects, or staying in our self-catering accommodations, guests have the chance to be part of this transformative journey.

Our inclusion in National Geographic’s Cool List 2024 was not only a celebration of our rewilding success but also recognition of the Sanctuary’s unique role as a trailblazer in sustainable travel. National Geographic praised Broughton’s potential as a leader in regenerative tourism, where visitors’ experiences are deeply linked to the environment they are helping to protect.

Combining the restoration of natural habitats with welcoming guests to witness and participate in the process has made Broughton a compelling destination for those seeking more than just a scenic escape. Visitors leave with a greater appreciation for the land’s history, the challenges and joys of conservation, and the rewilding efforts that are helping to revive our ecosystems.

Rewilding Experiences for Guests

Broughton Sanctuary offers a range of immersive experiences that allow guests to observe and engage with the rewilding process. From spotting rare bird species to taking part in guided forest bathing sessions that highlight the health benefits of being in nature, the estate invites guests to explore and connect with its rich and evolving biodiversity.
