Building trust, sustaining presence in the age of AI and acceleration

Four days of contemplative practice and ethical discernment for senior policy leaders navigating AI governance and democratic renewal. In an age of relentless acceleration, this retreat offers the rare gift of silence, depth, and community, restoring the interior spaces from which wisdom emerges, and moral clarity is sustained.

The invitation

In a world where attention is engineered for profit, where we face a collapse in trust, and where democratic institutions struggle to keep pace with technological change—we invite you to pause and reconnect with what you know to be true: that decisions must come from hearts nurtured by humanity, love, and compassion.
The four-day residential retreat offers senior public leaders, policymakers, journalists, civic actors, scholars, and tech leaders a rare opportunity to step back from speed, noise, and constant decision pressure, and to reconnect with the deeper moral and human foundations of their work.
Drawing on contemplative traditions adapted for public life, the retreat creates a disciplined yet spacious environment in which participants can strengthen ethical judgment, cultivate sustained attention, and explore how human discernment can be protected within AI-mediated systems.

What sets this contemplative policy retreat apart

This contemplative policy retreat follows a gentle but intentional daily rhythm inspired by the Benedictine balance of prayer and work. Each day weaves together periods of silence, contemplative practice, shared meals, reflective dialogue, and focused policy workshops. Practices such as Lectio Divina, meditation, and the daily examen are adapted as secularisable disciplines of attention, accessible to participants from diverse professional, religious, and cultural backgrounds.

What we will do together

Over four days at Broughton Sanctuary, you will join 25-30 other leaders in a rhythm of silence, contemplative practice, and deep discernment. We will adapt Benedictine spiritual practices—lectio divina, clearness committees, examen and policy discussion circles.
You'll work with GCRD's Contemplative Policy Matrix, moving from surface problem-solving to questions of human flourishing: Whose voices are missing? What fears drive each position? What would love do here?

What you'll leave with

You'll return to your work with a personal Rule of Life and practices for moral discernment. You will join a peer-network of like-minded leaders that will continue long after the retreat.

"the retreat creates a disciplined yet spacious environment in which participants can strengthen ethical judgment, cultivate sustained attention, and explore how human discernment can be protected within AI-mediated systems."

Broughton Sanctuary

The retreat will be held here at the 2,500-acre Broughton Sanctuary, just outside Skipton, at the foothills of The Yorkshire Dales, one of the most picturesque parts of the country. Established in 1097, Broughton Hall is a house of transformation, home to the Tempest family for over 900 years, and enjoys a rich history stretching back over the millennium.

The Sanctuary is also home to one of Britain’s most exciting nature recovery projects, a heartfelt commitment to address one of our deepest contemporary crises, based upon an extensive tree-planting and rewilding programme. This year in 2025, we welcome beavers to the Sanctuary alongside our native cattle and Iron Age pigs. Subscribe to our Rewilding Broughton Youtube channel to learn more.

Avalon, our state-of-the-art wellbeing retreat centre is the beating heart of the Sanctuary. With extensive indoor and outdoor resources the building exists to serve the inner voyage of mind, body, spirit. During your stay you may unwind in the state-of-the-art biophilic designed Pool Suite; including a clear 20-metre pool, steam room and sauna, plus hydromassage pool. Beyond the building itself, the Sanctuary grounds offer a chance to return to source, from meditation labyrinths, wild swimming reservoirs, a cosmic garden and much more.

We have a large variety of rooms available, whether in Broughton Hall itself, or throughout our eclectic collection of 20 stunning Retreat Houses, including converted barns, former coachhouses and gatehouses.
