A Psyche the Size
of the Earth

Creating a new
mythology of place

BOOK NOW
The roots of European mythic and spiritual traditions are anchored in the land and, if we know how to tune into them, the stories of our places and the other-than-humans who occupy them with us can be our greatest teachers.
How can we reclaim these highly functional ancestral worldviews, and weave them into an authentic, grounded practice for very different times?

A psyche the size of Earth

The old myths and philosophies of the West offer up a world in which everything is alive, and has purpose and intentionality of its own. Our oldest stories show us what it might be like to inhabit an animate world in which humans are fully enmeshed. In which animals and birds always have something to teach us, and trees and plants can save or cure us. In which divine women are not only immanent in the land, but are the mediators between the land and the Otherworld, bearing its lifegiving gifts. But over the centuries, these old traditions have been deliberately overwritten, and that sense of awe, of connection, of belonging to a mysterious world which has many depths and layers to explore, is largely missing in our lives today. We’ve lost the voices of the ancestors who might show us how to take up the shimmering story-threads of the past, and weave them into the tapestry of a very different present.

During this retreat, we’ll learn once again how to fully participate in what psychologist James Hillman called ‘a psyche the size of Earth’. We’ll go out and listen to the land’s dreaming, and in the process, we’ll find ourselves getting dreamt. Through story, journeying, writing, map-making and land-based practices, we’ll explore the imaginal in the land, questing for the richly mythic and archetypal Otherworld of native British and Irish traditions.

The work we’ll do is rooted in mythology and archetypal psychology – but above all, it’s rooted in a deeply grounded participation in the land where our feet are planted. We’ll learn to re-enchant ourselves, to restore the more-than-human element in our sense of self, and to weave ourselves more deeply into the living stories of our places.

Questions to consider
A Psyche the Size of Earth

What can place tell us about who we are, and who we might one day become?

How can we put our roots down deeply into the land we inhabit, and find a sense of belonging there?

How can we come into relationship with the spiritus loci, with the archetypal energies that populate our places, and so weave ourselves into the ongoing story of the land?

Example Day
What to expect
Mornings will be spent working with Sharon in Avalon Wellbeing Centre. A variety of optional afternoon activities will be offered, including a labyrinth walk and well visit, a tour of Broughton's remarkable nature recovery programme, somatic movement practice and the opportunity to learn some new journalling techniques. You might also prefer to spend some time on the land by yourself, or unwind in Avalon's state-of-the-art biophilic-designed Pool Suite. Some evenings will be free and on others there will be the chance to participate in a sound bathing experience, or in a music / drumming gathering around a roaring fire at the Fire Temple.

Welcome to Broughton Sanctuary

The retreat will be held here at the 2,500-acre Broughton Sanctuary, just outside Skipton, at the foothills of The Yorkshire Dales, one of the most picturesque parts of the country. Established in 1097, Broughton Hall is a house of transformation, home to the Tempest family for over 900 years, and enjoys a rich history stretching back over the millennium.

The Sanctuary is also home to one of Britain’s most exciting nature recovery projects, a heartfelt commitment to address one of our deepest contemporary crises, based upon an extensive tree-planting and rewilding programme. This year in 2025, we welcome beavers to the Sanctuary alongside our native cattle and Iron Age pigs. Subscribe to our Rewilding Broughton Youtube channel to learn more.

Avalon, our state-of-the-art wellbeing retreat centre is the beating heart of the Sanctuary. With extensive indoor and outdoor resources the building exists to serve the inner voyage of mind, body, spirit. During your stay you may unwind in the state-of-the-art biophilic designed Pool Suite; including a clear 20-metre pool, steam room and sauna, plus hydromassage pool. Beyond the building itself, the Sanctuary grounds offer a chance to return to source, from meditation labyrinths, wild swimming reservoirs, a cosmic garden and much more.

We have a large variety of rooms available, whether in Broughton Hall itself, or throughout our eclectic collection of 20 stunning Retreat Houses, including converted barns, former coachhouses and gatehouses.
